The formation of a 75-man strong team by the Police in London has made the tackling of knife crime overtakes terrorism as priority for the first time after the stabbing of seven people four out which all are in London alone.
The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has promised to tackle knife crime after more shocking and tragic stabbings mainly in the Capital. Adnan Patel a youngster in our area Leyton was among the latest victim of knife crime.
The Police are questioning four people after the 20-year Hafiz of Quran was stabbed.
In a desperate attempt to flee the attack the Late Adnan sped off in his car but lost control due to injuries sustained in his stomach and collapsed while reciting last prayer apparently Shahadah an Islamic testimony of faith on the way to hospital on Thursday evening.
On my way to work on Friday the following morning only two hundred yards from my house the police cordoned the road named South Birkbeck Road near the flats where the men who apparently stabbed Late Adnan were arrested.
Adnan was so popular and so many people in our Mosque were reminding me of him implying that I knew him as well as he was regular in the neighbouring Mosque.
The Late Hafiz used to lead the Prayer of Salatut Tarawih in the Mosque in Stratford during the Month of Ramadan that is why he could not be forgotten making him popular among those who attend the Mosque the talk of the town.
In the nearby Walthamstow another youngster in his 20th was fatally stabbed and later died in Hospital on the same evening. A man and a woman were also arrested after a 19-year old died in Edmonton North London the twentieth teenager to die in the capital this year alone.
In the nearby Tottenham a man in his 40s died of head injuries after having found to have been slashed with a knife behind a disused public on the High Street. Violence in the Capital has become an international issue after the frenzied stabbing of two French students a week before in an incident described by the police as one of the grisliest cases they had seen.
The two French were stabbed more than 200 times before they were burnt. A second man is being charged for the murder of the two French post graduate students.
So no wonder tackling knife crime has overtaken terrorism as number one priority with the setting up of 75-strong team to target those carrying weapons according to the police.
Although a Police spokesman refused to describe the latest crime as epidemic yet the six week campaign launched by the London Metropolitan police in which over 500 knives were seized in proactive operations to get knives off the streets of London as growing knife culture among children and young people is causing great concern with the latest stabbing raising an already alarming death toll.
Over 27,000 have been searched and more than 1,200 people have been arrested so far. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair Acknowledged that the recent spate of stabbings graphically illustrates the “need for everyone to pull together” to put an end to what he described as this “unacceptable violence”.
Despite all these the Police have assured the public that London is still safe place for a City of its size with 162 murders last year in May compared with New York with 496 murders and as many as 2,262 in 1990 before the crime fell in that City.
For the first time another crime overtakes terrorism since the world wide war on terror was launched after the September 11 attack in New York in 2001 and was strengthened here in London after the 7/7 attack in 2005 which left more than 50 dead.
With the spiral wave of knife stabbings especially here in London the police like ever y person in the Capital are very much concerned as to how to tackle this violent knife culture which is becoming endemic.
Therefore tackling this crime is the top priority which should be given urgent attention interestingly overtaking terrorism for the first time with the formation of the 75-man strong team to tackle this menace of unfortunate knife culture which is turning to a kind of fashion among youngsters and children here in London.
According to the new proposal to be introduced anyone over 16 caught carrying a knife would be prosecuted previously they used to be cautioned as the presumption of prosecution only applies to those who are over 18.
