Mandela: There Are 7 Female Prisoners Whose Husbands Are Also Interned In Israeli Jails

August 7, 2008

The Mandela institute for human rights and political prisoners revealed that there are seven Palestinian mothers imprisoned in Israeli jails whose husbands are also prisoners suffering from harsh living conditions and maltreatment.

Lawyer Buthaina Duqmaq, the head of the institute, stated that the Israeli prison authority deprives those Palestinian wives from seeing their children and their imprisoned husbands flouting international law.

Duqmaq said that Iman Ghazzawi, 33, is serving a 13-year prison term and has two little children living with their paternal grandparents because her husbands Shaher Barakat is in Israeli jails too.

The jurist also underlined the suffering of other female prisoners whose husbands also in Israeli jails namely Nura Al-Hashlamon, 37, Ihlam Al-Tamimi, 28, Khulud Al-Mesri, 39, Ittaf Alyan, 44, Khawla Zeitawi, 30, pointing out that all those seven women are denied seeing their children and husbands; besides, some of them suffers from diseases and are not provided appropriate medical treatment.

The jurist underscored that the number of Palestinian women in Israeli jails rose to 79 female prisoners detained in the prisons of Damon, Tel Mond and Ramla, noting that the rate of arrested women in 2008 increased by 25 percent compared to that of 2007.

The jurist also unveiled that there are five Palestinian girls under age 18 in Israeli jails, three of them are administratively detained namely Salwa Salah,17, Sara Seyori, 16, Afaf Betteek, 17.

In another context, Israel's ambassador to the UN Itzhak Levanon announced that Israel will boycott the next UN conference on human rights and racism to be held in the spring of next year.

Israel and the US had withdrawn from the previous conference held about seven years ago at the pretext that its deliberations centered on Israel only and discussed proposals to equate Zionism with racism. The proposal was not adopted at the end.

43 MPs still languishing in Israeli jails

The PA ministry of prisoners and ex-prisoners' affairs has confirmed Monday that the Israeli occupation government released former PA finance minister MP Omar Abdul Razeq, leaving 43 Palestinian MPs from Hamas's bloc in the PLC in detention.

Reyadh Al-Ashqar, the information officer in the ministry explained in a statement he issued in this regard and a copy of which was obtained by the PIC, that the Israeli Salem military court sentenced Abdul Razeq to 26 months in jail, but decided to release him after he served more than 25 months in detention.

He also pointed out that despite the release of Abdul Razeq, the Israeli occupation authorities was still detaining 43 Palestinian MPs and three former ministers in the 10th PA government which was formed by Hamas after it swept the legislative elections in 2006.

Abdul Razeq was kidnapped at the hands of the IOF troops along with tens of Palestinian lawmakers from Hamas's change and reform bloc in the PA legislative, including PLC speaker MP Dr. Aziz Dwaik among others more than two years ago.

PA prisoners and ex-prisoners' affairs minister Ahmad Shwaidah hailed the release of Abdul Razeq, and inquired about the health condition of the five Palestinian lawmakers who were injured when a reckless Israeli van driver transporting them to the court drove in a high speed before he deliberately made a sharp stop, sending the five handcuffed lawmakers to the ground.

At least two Palestinian lady legislators MP Maryam Saleh and MP Mona Mansour were also kidnapped at the hands of the IOF troops. Saleh spent seven months in detention before she was released few days ago, while Mansour was reportedly released on Monday after two weeks in detention.

As this developed, the ministry appealed to all concerned human rights and legal institutions to immediately intervene, and to pressure the Israeli occupation into releasing those kidnapped parliamentarians without conditions.
