Supporters Of Ousted President Ravalomanana Pour Into Madagascar Capital

African Regional News Updates

30 March 2009

Antananarivo - Supporters of Madagascar's former president Marc Ravalomanana staged a fresh rally in the capital on Monday in their latest protest against his army-backed ousting earlier this month.

Around 15 000 people gathered to demand the return of Ravalomanana, who was forced to resign on March 17 after a series of protests by then opposition chief Andry Rajoelina, now the country's transitional leader.

Organisers urged the crowd not to march to a city square which hosted previous opposition demonstrations.

At least 34 people were injured Saturday in a stampede after police fired warning shots and teargas to stop them from marching to the May 13 square.

Rajoelina was sworn in as the Indian Ocean's transitional administration leader, but the ousted president has termed his rise to power as a coup.

Southern African leaders condemned his takeover as unconstitutional and were considering sanctions for the crisis-hit island at a summit on Monday in Mbabane.

Speakers at the Antananarivo rally rejoiced at comments by French Co-operation Minister Alain Joyandet Sunday that Paris considered Ravalomanana as Madagascar's president.

Ravalomana arrives for SADC meeting

Ousted Madagascan President Marc Ravalomanana had arrived at the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit in Swaziland at noon to plead with regional leaders to reinstate him.

Ravalomanana was ousted two weeks ago by the army and replaced with 34-year old Andry Rajoelina, former DJ and mayor of the capital Antananarivo.

Diplomatic sources said they expected Ravalomanana to ask SADC to reinstate him with force if necessary.

But they added that SADC had no appetite for a military intervention and instead were counting on new elections to stabilise the chronically-restive Indian Ocean island state.

But the leaders are expected today to suspend Madagascar from the organisation- the first time the 15-member SADC has ever suspended a member nation.
