Niger's Tuareg Rebels Agree To Make Peace, Return To Homeland

Al-Maghreb News Updates

26 March 2009

Tuareg Rebels of the Niger Patriotic Front are seen here at a press conference in Tripoli declaring that they intend to lay down arms and make peace with government
after two-month long negotiations with Libyan mediators with the aim to make peace in this part of Africa, Thursday 26 March 2009.

A group of Tuareg rebels, The Niger Patriotic Front, FPN, said Thursday that it is "ready to start a peace process" in the country under Libyan mediation.

Making a declaration to the press reporters in Tripoli, the group said it is to commence surrounding its arms during the coming period and to go back to normal life as part of peace and development process in Niger.

The declaration was approved by the chairman of the FPN, Mr. Aklu Sidisidi, its Chief of Staff Mohammad Ajdar, its official spokesman Alboutari Mohammad, its Secretary-General Kamal Abdullah, and its official for foreign affairs Yusuf Maha, who all were present in Tripoli.

FPN, created by a split within the Movement of Niger People for Justice (MNJ), declared its "availability" and its "commitment" to the implementation of a peace process in Niger. It said it had started negotiations with Libyan authorities about two months with the objective to give a chance to create a peace dynamic in Niger.

The negotiations with Libyan mediators led to an agreement on a framework for negotiations that includes conditions and implementation program that will lead to a comprehensive peace in Niger.

They also said in the statement that they renew confidence in the President of the African Union Muammar Al-Qathafi's in his capacity as peace broker in Africa; that they were totally committed to making peace in their homeland Niger; that they demand from Libya to be the mediator of these peace negotiations.

On a visit to Niamey in early March, Al-Qathafi negotiated the release of five Niger soldiers and a gendarme who had been held by the MNJ.
