31 March 2009 Qatar's Emir on Monday hosted a
reconciliatory summit between Libyan leader Moamer
Kadhafi and Saudi King Abdullah following a Kadhafi
tirade which overshadowed the Arab summit, a Libyan
official said.
"The misunderstanding between Saudi Arabia and Libya
has been ended during this summit," Libyan senior
official Ahmad Kadaf al-Dam told reporters.
During the summit, Kadhafi told the Saudi king he was
ready to exchange visits with him before walking out
of the opening session of the annual Arab summit in
Doha.
After Qatar's emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani,
the summit's host, spoke, Kadhafi addressed the Saudi
king saying, "It has been six years since you have
been avoiding a confrontation with me."
"You are always lying and you're facing the grave and
you were made by Britain and protected by the United
States," he said in front of 16 other leaders gathered
for the two-day meeting.
The two countries have had tense relations since the
publication in June 2004 of a press article in the
United States and Saudi accusing Kadhafi of plotting
the assassination of King Abdullah, then crown prince.
"I am ready to visit you and for you to visit me,"
Kadhafi later said. Sound on the televised
transmission of the session was interrupted. "I am the
leader of the Arab leaders, the king of kings of
Africa and the imam of the Muslims," said Kadhafi, who
has been in power since 1969 and had recently been
elected to chair the African Union.
He later quit the session, which was devoted to
reconciliation efforts among Arabs divided over
Israel's 22-day offensive on Gaza, to go and visit a
museum in Doha, according to his delegation. |
