16 March 2009 Abuja — Sudan Minister of
International Cooperation, Eltigani Fedail has
expressed happiness over Nigeria's support to African
Union (AU) position on the International Criminal
Court (ICC) warrant of arrest on Sudan President Omar
Al-bashir.
Fedail, who addressed journalists yesterday at a
press briefing after a meeting at the foreign affairs
ministry, in Abuja , said Nigeria is committed to
bringing back peace in Sudan and ICC's warrant of
arrest on president Al-bashir will not help restore
peace in Sudan.
Speaking further, he said Sudan government under
President Al-bashir has allocated $1 billion on
infrastructural development in Darfur and he is the
only president in Sudan that was able to sign peace
agreement on conflict of over 20 years in Darfur but
instead of receiving praises, he was rewarded with a
warrant of arrest.
"80% of the peace agreement has been implemented
and the remaining 20% is on process but we cannot do
more unless we have peace" he stated.
The major problem in Darfur is lack of connectivity
with Sudan, and president Al-bashir has constructed
more than 2,000km of road connecting Darfur which is
one of the biggest projects in the country, Fedail
said.
"There are over 80 NGO's in Sudan and we appreciate
the work they are doing but the problem with some of
them is that they exceed their humanitarian mandate
and at the end turn it to political issues.
We have human rights monitors and also United
Nations Criminal Rights Monitors who are doing well
and they should be allowed to do their work. Sudan is
a country with sovereignty and we would not allow
anybody to interfere in our affairs" the minister
said. |
