Tanzanian, Ethiopian Politicians Blame Genocide On Colonialism

African Regional News Updates

12 April 2009

Kigali — The visiting delegation of politicians from Tanzania and Ethiopia has blamed western colonialists for being responsible for the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The politicians, who are representing their countries in joining Rwandans to commemorate the Genocide, said this after visiting Gisozi Memorial Centre on Monday

"This is a horrible tragedy for Rwanda, and it is also a huge failure of the international community in peacekeeping mission," said the deputy secretary general of the Tanzanian ruling party, Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM), George Mkuchika.

"The blame goes to the colonialists who divided us; they are responsible for everything that happened in this country."

The historical documentation at the Centre of victims of the Genocide offered grim testimonies to the delegations of how the genocide was organised and executed.

"Let us remember what happened here and learn from the errors that allowed this to take place. We as Africans have to do the best we can to maintain our peace."

Mkuchika is also the Tanzanian Minister of Information, Sports and Culture.

Speaking after a tour of the multi-storied building that holds neatly stuck posters and video screens bearing testimonies, the Executive Member of the Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), Redwan Hussein, who is also the Head of Public Relations of his party in Addis Ababa blamed the colonizers for being the root cause of the Genocide.

"We stand on hallowed ground where blood was shed...what happened here was a failure of every member of the international community. It was not our finest hour and Rwanda fell to its near death," Hussein said.

He added: "The genocide in Rwanda was against the African core existence of love and peace; this is the time we should focus at build firm roots of our continent never to experience such a tragedy." He said that his excitement lies in Rwanda's reconstruction and its progress in development.

The delegations were accompanied to the Memorial Centre by MP Francis Kaboneka.
