Nine Muslim Brotherhood Leaders Arrested In Alexandria

Egyptian security forces in Alexandria launched a widespread house raids campaign Wednesday eve, April 22, against MB members and leaders in Alexandria.

Mustafa El-Sharbatly, Medhat Ghoneim (accountant), Mohammed Abdurrahman (engineer), El-Sayyid Sulaiman, Omar Mahmoud, Mohamed Farouk, Ibrahim El-Suheimy, and Hasan El-Iskandarany were all arrested while others had not been present at the time of the raids including Reda Abduh, General Manager of the Ameriyyah Company for Pharmaceutical Drugs, who was at work at the time his house was being raided.

The arrests take place under the escalation of the number of MB detainees since early March including several MB leaders.

In a recent development, meanwhile, MB Parliamentary Bloc Spokesperson Dr. Hamdy Hasan affirmed in his statement that the situation of human rights in Egypt was obviously very bad adding that “the daily protests and central security vehicles we have been seeing on the major streets and squares of Egypt are the best proof.”

“I believe that international institutions know the reality of the human rights situation in Egypt and about the National Council of Human Right’s delay in releasing its annual report over fear of its impact on Egypt’s image in the UN,” Hasan stated adding that the council would not be able to beautify the ugly situation.

Press sources had affirmed that the delay in releasing the NCHR’s annual report went back to the council’s desire to improve the image presented on the human rights situation in Egypt and reduce the severity of transgressions and breaches concerned with the violations of citizens’ political, economic, and social rights included in the report.
