We Need Outsiders

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)
scored former Senator Franklin Drilon for opposing the
internationalization of the Mindanao peace talks
including the participation of former British Prime
Minister Tony Blair and former United Nations
secretary-general Kofi Annan.
Drilon said "too much internationalization of the
Mindanao peace talks" would be counter-productive in
the resolution of the old-age peace problem in the
south. He believes the Mindanao conflict should be
solved primarily by Filipinos themselves.
"While we welcome the offer of assistance of our
allies in resolving the decades-old Mindanao conflict,
I am afraid that the too much internationalization of
the peace process will ultimately work against the
quest for peace in Mindanao,” he said.
Instead of seeking Blair and Annan's help, the former
senator said the government should sincerely conduct
consultations with the people of Mindanao on how to
resolve the conflict.
"The internationalization of the Mindanao peace
process is against our national interests," Drilon
said.
Reacting to this, a member of the MILF Peace Panel
told www.luwaran.com/net on condition of anonymity
that we need the help of outsiders or the
international community, saying Filipinos have
shortchanging the Moros for almost a century.
“We can’t fix ourselves, we need outsiders to help us
and act as guarantors that you will not chat us,” he
stressed.
He cited the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral
Domain (MOA-AD) as a living example of how Filipinos,
with some exceptions, shortchanged the Moros.
He also cited the case of the Moro National Liberation
Front (MNLF) and the two peace agreements it signed
with the government which are not implemented
satisfactorily years after the signing.
However, the MILF clarified that Drilon is not
anti-Moro or anti-MILF compared to Senator Mar Roxas.
Drilon has many Moro friends including Atty. Musib
Buat, who is a member of the MILF Peace Panel.
