The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF),
in a bid to seek wider participation in finding a just
and lasting peace in Mindanao, has called on the
Bishop-Ulama Conference (BUC) to be neither
pro-government nor anti-government in their efforts to
help solve the Mindanao problem.
Sheikh Mohammad Muntassir, head of the MILF committee
on da’wah (Islamic call), has made this appeal not
only to the BUC but also to other religious leaders or
groups in Mindanao.
He said men of religion are supposed to be principled
people based on their religion and must not be swayed
by the “blessings” from the “benevolent hands of the
state”.
“Be on your own; principled men and groups stand firm
and independent,” he stressed, even as he appreciated
members of the BUC to have done a great deal of
efforts in bridging gaps between religious divides.
However, he urged them never to get money from the
government or their integrity and independence will
badly tarnished and people will not follow you.
The appeal perfectly jibed with the signing of a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among religious
leaders in Mindanao seeking to help seek a lasting
solution to the problem.
After the signing the MOU at the Father Saturnino
University in Butuan City yesterday (MoU), all BUC
regional leaders in Mindanao embraced each other as a
sign of “unified effort” in propagating peace in the
island.
“This is big commitment and a big participation of all
religious sectors in fulfilling our dreams,” a ranking
Roman Catholic leader in the island was quoted by
Manila Bulletin reporter as saying.
“It does in an atmosphere where people are free to
speak in order to be understood and listen in order to
understand,” a statement of a religious group here
stated.
“The MoU also promotes among groups a readiness to
acknowledge present hurts, as well as a commitment to
explore new ways of building peace,” the statement
added.
Among the signatories of the MoU were former Catholic
Bishop Conference of the Philippines president Bishop
Juan de Dios Pueblos – representing the Roman
Catholic; Rev. Charlie Prior for the
Protestant/Evangelical; and Bedar Imam of the Muslim
group.
