24 April 2009 Sokoto — Sokoto State government
has spent the sum of N100 million for the
establishment of Integrated Model Almajiri School at
Tudeen-Yandogo, Dange/Shuni Local Government Area.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Religious
Affairs, Alhaji Abubakar Nababa, who made this known
in a chat with newsmen in Sokoto, said the school was
presently managed by five Islamic teachers and was an
integration of the traditional Quránic schools with
western education.
According to him, the school was intended for 600
students, but about 200 have been admitted so far.
He said pupils were provided with uniforms, mats
and given three square meals daily, adding that the
five teachers were being paid monthly allowances.
"We spend N98, 000 on feeding for the pupils and
teachers daily, while the pupils are being taught
Quránic, Islamic and western education at different
intervals. So, they don't go begging for food while
they are kept in a modernised traditional Almajiri
school."
The school has an administrative block, four blocks
of eight classrooms, toilet facilities and a hostel,
among other structures, saying that more of such
schools would be set up cross the state in due course.
In another development, the state has donated 69
motorcycles worth N7.5 million to some Quránic and
Islamiya school teachers across the 23 local
government areas of the state.
Nababa said three beneficiaries from each of the 23
local government councils were chosen from the Izala
and Tijjaniya sects, as well as the Jamaátul Nasril
Islam (JNI) organisation.
The move he said was aimed at fostering unity among
the groups, saying that the teachers were expected to
preach on basic tenets of Islam only in groups.
"To this end, the preachers were also directed to
teach all intending pilgrims the basic hajj rites to
fully prepare them for the forthcoming Hajji."
He said plans have also been concluded to set up
the Hizbah organisation in the state and that a data
base on mosques, Islamiya and Quránic schools had been
created to allow the state government to disseminate
reliable information on them. |
