8 May 2009 Kampala — The Muslim community in
Kabarole district has accused the khadi, Sheikh Habib
Mande, of selling property belonging to the Uganda
Muslim Supreme Council.
Mande is co-accused with Burahya county Sheik
Hussein Mahabba.
The two are also accused of embezzling funds for
Muslim activities.
Over 220 imams, councillors, chairpersons and
elders in the Toro region held a meeting on Thursday
at Bukwali Mosque in Fort Portal town over the matter.
Led by Burahya county chairperson, Sheikh Muhammad
Sande, the Muslims said Mande and Mahabba embezzled
sh21m meant for the construction of Nyabukara Islamic
School in Fort Portal Municipality.
"When we raise issues of corruption and
embezzlement, they call us rebels or anti-Mubbajje,"
Sande noted. The money, he explained, was donated to
the Muslims by the Saudi Arabian embassy.
Sande said Mande and Mahabba had not deposited sh3m
from the sale of Muslim land in Kanyambeho on the Fort
Portal-Kamwenge road in the community account.
In a letter of April 19, the Muslims said the
actions of their leaders had hindered the development
of Muslims.
They also said money from the district abattoirs
was mismanaged.
Mande, however, denied the allegations, saying
those opposed to his leadership were supporters of
rival Mufti Sheikh Zubair Kayongo.
He said Sande was among the people who on January
28 elected Kayongo, adding that he was no longer able
to work with Sande. |
