24 May 2009 Kampala — TWO followers of Mufti
Shaban Mubajje were badly beaten and injured while
others got away unscathed as they attempted to block
the visit of the rival Kibuli-based mufti, Sheikh
Zubair Kayongo, to Nyamitanga Mosque in Mbarara
Municipality on Friday.
Ahmed Gayira and Muhammed Sowed, both from Kasubi
in Kampala, were part of a group of 20 Mubajje
supporters who came in a white Sahara pick-up truck
armed with hoe handles and knives to block Kayongo's
visit.
Haji Jamir Bakyase, the chairman of Nyamitanga
Mosque, said they were beaten as they had started
burning the tents that had been pitched in the
mosque's compound in readiness for Kayongo's visit.
"They were 20 in number and came in a Sahara
pick-up carrying hoe handles. At first we did not mind
about them hoping they would not interfere with our
function but they prompted us to beat them when they
burnt our tents," he said.
The two men, who had blood oozing out of wounds on
their heads, mouth and nose, were taken by Police to
Mbarara Hospital.
Bakyase said other five supporters of Mubajje who
had escaped were netted as they tried to cross River
Rwizi. He condemned Mubajje for trying to disorganise
Kayongo's functions, saying the act indicated Mubajje
was a failure and should resign right away
"This mosque does not belong to Mubajje. It was
built using money raised by all Muslims therefore we
are entitled to hold functions here," he said.
He added: "When Mubajje came here we never
disorganised his visit nor did we stop him. Why should
he do this to us?"
Another supporter of Mubajje, Ahmed Kagwisagye, was
saved by the Police from an angry mob that had
surrounded him.
Kayongo's supporters shouted: "Allah Akhbar" (God
is Great) when Bakyase told them that the arrangements
to receive Kayongo would go on as planned.
