26 May 2009 The African Union will hold its next
summit in Sirte, Libya, on July 1-3, the organization
announced Tuesday.
The theme of the 13th AU summit is "Investing in
agriculture for economic growth and food security".
Prior to the summit, there will be a meeting of the
PRC from June 24 to 26 and a meeting of the Executive
Council of the AU from June 28 to 30.
"The decision was taken Monday during the meeting of
the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) at the
AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa," the A.U. said in a
statement.
Heads of states and governments will discuss
agricultural investment during the body's 13th
ordinary summit, it added.
Madagascar has been mired in political crisis since
weeks of protests saw army-backed opposition chief
Andry Rajoelina topple Marc Ravalomanana as president
in March.
Madagascar was to host the AU's second biannual
meeting, but was suspended by the 53-member bloc
following a political crisis that erupted earlier this
year.
In a decision on March 20, the pan-African body said
what happened in March constituted "unconstitutional
change of government," referring to the forced
resignation of Ravalomanana.
Ethiopia, Libya and Mauritius have offered to host the
summit in place of Madagascar. Rajoelina visited Libya
last week and met the Leader of the Revolution in
Tripoli.
