24 May 2009 Damascus - A meeting of the Kashmir
Contact Group was held in Damascus on the occasion of
the 36th session of Organization of Islamic
Conference’s (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers. The
meeting was presided over by the OIC Secretary
General, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and participated among
others by the delegations from Pakistan, Nigeria,
Turkey and Saudi Arabia. The AJK Prime Minister,
Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob, Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo,
Professor Nazir Ahmad Shawl and Syed Yousuf Naseem
represented Kashmiris in the meeting.
The members of Kashmiri delegation briefed the meeting
about the Kashmir dispute and its implications on the
security and stability of South Asia. They said that
due to the non-settlement of the dispute, the peace
and development of the region had become a nightmare.
They apprised the meeting about gross human rights
violations by Indian troops in the occupied territory,
illegal detentions of Hurriyet leaders along with
curbs on their mass contacts and non-issuance of
travel documents to the Chairman of All Parties
Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq by the
occupation authorities for participating in the OIC
meeting.
The Kashmiri leaders said that holding of farcical
polls in occupied Kashmir could not be the substitute
of Kashmiris’ right to self-determination and termed
the sham a futile effort of India to mislead the
international community and sabotage the liberation
movement.
The Contact Group of the OIC assured the Kashmiri
delegation of raising the issue of human rights
violations before the United Nations Human Rights
Council (UNHRC) and taking further practical steps in
this regard.
During the General session, Foreign Ministers of many
countries said that among other challenges to the
Muslim world were to find out solutions to the
disputes of Palestine and Kashmir. They urged the OIC
to take practical steps to settle these disputes.
Turkish Foreign Minister said that the OIC needed to
adopt a practical and concrete policy to help settle
these two dangerous disputes. »
