18 May 2009 Palestinian chief justice Sheikh
Tayseer Al-Tamimi has charged the Israeli occupation
authority with planning to convert the Old City in Al-Khalil
into a Jewish ghetto.
Tamimi said that Israeli war minister Ehud Barak's
permission for far right parties to organize a
"provocative tour" of the Old City on Monday along
with the leaders of settlers in the city falls in line
with systematic measures against the city to force its
inhabitants out and to judaize it.
He disclosed that members of the right wing
government of Benjamin Netanyahu have coordinated with
leaders of settlers' societies and organizations to
prepare secret plots to be tabled with Netanyahu that
include the construction of 20 settlement outposts to
turn the Old City into a fully-fledged Jewish ghetto
and take full control of the Ibrahimi Mosque, which is
in the heart of the Old City.
Al-Khalil will remain Arab, Islamic with the
efforts of its inhabitants who have vowed to defend it
with all means, Tamimi underlined.
He called on the UN to provide protection for the
Palestinian people, lands and holy shrines in face of
the Israeli settlers' "barbaric" attacks, which are
carried out with the knowledge and protection of the
Israeli army.
Extremists from Zionist national
party given Ok to make tour inside Al-Khalil
Israeli war minister Ehud Barak allowed members
from the right-wing national party to make a tour on
Monday in the H1 areas in the heart of Al-Khalil city
which are under the PA control. Such a move could
spark confrontations with the Palestinians in the
city.
The participants in this tour will include
ultra-extremist Knesset members affiliated with the
national party such as Ya'akov Katz, Aryeh Eldad, Uri
Ariel and Michael Ben-Ari.
The Israeli army radio said that Barak gave orders
to provide the participants with military escort and
armored vehicles.
Knesset member Katz justified this move by alleging
that Al-Khalil city is an Israeli area like Haifa and
Yafa at the pretext that the number of Palestinians in
the city is less than the Jews!
In another context, the Israeli police announced
Sunday that it kidnapped 360 Palestinian workers from
the West Bank in the past two days on charges of
entering their Palestinian lands occupied by Israel in
1948 without permits.
The Hebrew radio also reported that the Israeli
central court in Petah Tikva sentenced a Palestinian
worker called Saddam Milhim from Tulkarem to 11 months
in jail at the pretext of entering the 1948 occupied
lands without a permit.
