2 May 2009 Mogadishu — The chairman of the
Asmara-based Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia
Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, demanded the killings in
Mogadishu to be stopped immediately on Friday.
Sheik Aweys, who spoke hundreds of people in Abu
Hureira Mosque in Bakaro market, said it was wrong to
kill innocent civilians and those among the Islamists.
He described as unfortunate step to harm the people
who helped the insurgents during their struggle
against "the enemy" and called for the people who are
killing the innocent people to stop.
Sheik Aweys said that their fighting is against
what he called the infidels but not those who are
working with them. He added that the people working
with them are wrong but it is not right to kill them.
"The jihad is against the infidels but is not right
to kill each other. The hypocrites are in the people
they are corrected in speech but their killing is not
right," said Sheik Aweys.
His speech comes as Islamist insurgents started to
hunt down each other in the capital Mogadishu recently
Separately, government officials expressed concern
about the killing of parliamentarians and other
government officials in Mogadishu.
The deputy speaker of the Somali parliament said it
was unfortunate to shell the centre of the parliament
at a time the parliament endorsed the Islamic Sharia.
President Condemns Recent Attacks
On Parliament
Somali president Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed has
condemned Saturday the mortar attacks that recently
targeted the centre of the parliament.
In a press conference he held in the presidential
palace in Mogadishu, the president said he was very
sorry about recent shelling on parliament and sent
condolences to the bereaved families.
Asked bout the arrival of the opposition leader
Sheik Hassan Dahor Aweys, he replied that there is
political difference between them and that he was
ready to talk with him about his political view.
President Sharif also declared that Sudanese
government talked Aweys about the reconciliation
process.
He said that he has been to Turkey, Egypt, and
Belgium and those countries pledged for him to support
his government.
President Sheik Sharif also welcomed the decision
of the Somali parliament which endorsed the Islamic
Sharia. |
