Somali Government Of Sheikh Sharif Vows It Will Defeat Opposition

Somali News Updates

16 May 2009

Somalia — The transitional federal government of Somalia said on Wednesday that it would crush the Islamist rebels who are trying to topple the Somali government led by Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed.

Fighting between Islamist rebels and government soldiers has killed about 120 people and injured about 300 in the capital Mogadishu for the last eight days.

Somalia minister for Planning and International Cooperation Abdurahman Abdishakur Warsame who was speaking at a ceremony commemorating the day of Somali Youth 15 May, said the government has full support from both the Somali people and the international community and added that the government will clear the rebels from the country in the coming days.

"The government is determined to defend the opposition who are Islamic gangs and we promise that we will clear them from the country," said Abdirhman Abdishakur Warsame.

Abdiwahid Elmi Gonjeh, the deputy prime minister said it was a surprising thing that the Islamist rebels reject their leader of the Islamic Courts Union when he became the president of Somalia.

Clerics Conclude Two Days Meeting in Djibouti

The Somali clerics have concluded two days meeting in Djibouti overnight on the role of the Somali clerics for the restoration of the peace and solution in Somalia, officials told Shabelle radio on Friday.

Sheik Ahmed Abdi known as (Dhi'isow), a member of the Somali clerics who attended the meeting told Shabelle radio the many Somali religious mullahs from the abroad and inside the country had attended the meeting in Djibouti adding that it was talked more about how the Somali clerics could play crucial role for the restoring peace and stability of Somalia.

Asked about whether the meeting was talked about what caused the failure of the previous agreements reached by the sides of the Somalis, Sheik Dhi'isow replied that it was not discussed in the two days meeting in Djibouti.

It is not known whether the meeting of the Somali clerics in Djibouti can change anything about the current conflicts in Somalia thought most of the Somali clerics' decisions are not accepted by those who are against in the country.
