25 May 2009 Somalia — Samir Husni, the Arab
league representative for Somalia has requested from
the international community on Tuesday to bolster the
African Union peace keepers AMISOM in Somalia denying
that the League was planning to withdraw its
representatives from Somalia.
Mr. Samir who is Doha said that they request from
the international community to give military and
logistics support to the African peace keeping forces
in Somalia to protect the opposition groups and
continue the peace keeping mission in Somalia.
The Arab League said that there are other African
countries promised to send peace keeping forces to
Somalia calling for those countries to send their
soldiers quickly to Somalia.
Samir Husni also said that the AU peace keepers
will be less power than the opposition groups if they
are not given military support as soon as possible
adding the world is required to support to the AMISOM
forces in Somalia to protect the forces against the
transitional government led by president Sheik Sharif
Sheik Ahmed.
The request of the Arab League comes as the Somali
president Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed held a press
conference in Mogadishu yesterday and requested from
the international community to support his government
to protect the those who are against the his
government.
UN Envoy Visits Capital
UN's special representative for Somalia Ahmedou
Ould Abdalla has arrived Somali capital Mogadishu for
unannounced visit, an official told Shabelle radio on
Monday.
It is the first trip that the UN envoy for Somalia
comes to Mogadishu since Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed was
elected as president in Djibouti.
The information minister of the Somali government
Farhan Ali Mohamoud said that the UN's special envoy
for Somalia Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah came to Mogadishu
and met Somali president Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed in
the presidential palace.
The envoy has reportedly returned back to Nairobi
immediately with out noticing.
It is not known what president Sheik Sharif Sheik
Ahmed and the UN's special envoy for Somalia Ahmedou
Ould-Abdallah talked about their meeting.
Cabinet Ministers Endorse IGAD
Decision
Mogadishu — Somali cabinet ministers have approved
to close the ports and the airports that IGAD foreign
ministers demanded to block recently.
The information minister of the Somali government
Farhan, Ali Mohamud told reporters that the cabinet
ministers endorsed the decision by IGAD and said that
all the ports and the airports that are not under the
control of the government are closed.
"From 25 May 2009, all the airports and ports that
are not under the government control are closed except
the Humanitarian aid," said farhan Ali Mohamud.
"We request from the Untied Nations to approve the
decision by IGAD member states, he added.
The minister said that cabinet has also condemned
the suicide attack which killed government soldiers in
Mogadishu on Sunday.
