Ugandan NewMufti Sheik Zubair Kayongo Asks for Gadaffi Mosque
17 June 2009
Kampala — THE Kibuli-based rival mufti, Sheik Zubair Kayongo, has requested to hold prayers at the Gadaffi National Mosque in Kampala. The mosque is controlled by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council administration headed by Mufti Sheik Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje.
The mosque also houses the headquarters of Supreme Council.
Sheik Haruna Jjemba of Kayongo's Kibuli breakaway group said in a June 8 letter they had invited Kayongo to conduct Juma prayers with them.
In the letter, Jjemba, also the in charge of Kampala district in the Kayongo camp, argued that there was no mosque with the capacity to handle the 20,000 worshippers expected to attend the prayers.
"We request the management of the mosque to provide us with a suitable Friday in the month of July."
The letter is copied to the World Islamic Call Society, which is the caretaker of the mosque. It is also copied to Kayongo, the Kampala district Police commander and the Kampala district Kadhi.
The mosque was constructed with funding from the Libyan government which still meets the cost of maintenance through the Islamic Call Society.
The council spokes person, Hajji Nsereko Mutumba, yesterday said: "I have not seen such a letter, neither heard about it."
However, an official at the World Islamic Call Society, Sheik Jamir Byandala, confirmed receiving the letter. Byandala explained that the letter is awaiting approval by the country director, Sheik Muhammad Khawas.
