Chad Arrests Freed African Guantanamo Prisoner Mohammed al-Gharani
18 June 2009
Ndjamena - A former Guantanamo detainee freed by a US judge is being held by Chadian police pending confirmation of his status, the Chadian government said on Thursday. Interior and Security Minister Ahmat Mahamat Bashir said that Mohammed al-Gharani, who has dual Chadian and Saudi nationality, was subject to "our own investigations and verification of his Chadian nationality." "We were sent someone without any documents, no papers on him, not even a legal paper. We don't know know on what judicial basis he was freed," Bashir said, as a British non-governmental organisation, Reprieve, expressed concern. Arrested by the Americans at the age of 14 and transferred to the US "war on terror" facility at Guantanamo in a US base on Cuba, Mohammed al-Gharani was exonerated of all charges by a US federal judge on January 14.
He had spent seven years in Guantanamo and arrived in Chad on June 11, according to the US and Chadian governments. Reprieve, which monitors the fake of "war on terror" detainees, charged in a statement that "Gharani (was) inexplicably imprisoned by the government of Chad" and demanded "his immediate release to his family." "Last week Mohammed was finally 'freed' by the Obama administration - yet his ordeal continues. Seven days after leaving Guantanamo, Mohammed is still detained by the police in Chad - with no prospect of release," Reprieve said. "Mohammed's detention defies even Chadian law, where you cannot be held longer than 48 hours without being charged with a crime," said Reprieve attorney Ahmed Ghappour. Bashir stressed that al-Gharani was not in prison, but being looked after by police while his status was verified. - AFP
