Lagos Harare Route: Nigerian Diaspora In Zimbabwe Hails President
26 June 2009
Harare — The Nigerian community in Zimbabwe has commended President Mugabe's resolute stance towards economic and political liberation struggles, saying his work on the emancipation of Africa shows that he is truly an African statesman.
The community donated US$10 000 cash towards the Presidential Scholarship programme and a souvenior to President Mugabe.
Representatives of the community presented the money and souvenior to Zanu-PF secretary for administration Cde Didymus Mutasa at his party office in Harare.
Leader of the community Mr Chairman Benson said the donation was an appreciation of President Mugabe's role in the fight for the liberation of Zimbabwe.
"This is in appreciation of what President Mugabe is doing for Zimbabwe and Africa. He has stood resolutely for the empowerment of not only Zimbabwe but also for people on the continent.
"He has crossed the level of being a father for Zimbabwe to be truly an African citizen.
"We are delighted that he has stood for African emancipation and total black empowerment on the globe," he said.
The souvenior and cash were supposed to have been given to President Mugabe at his 85th birthday celebrations that were held in Chinhoyi this year.
Mr Benson said that as a community living in Zimbabwe they were enjoying a lot of freedom, thanks to the able leadership of President Mugabe. Receiving the goods on behalf of the President, Cde Mutasa thanked the community for their appreciation and kind donation, saying the money would go a long way in assisting young people under the Presidential Scholarship programme.
"I am heartened by the fact that you are also realising that President Mugabe is serving the entire continent.
"President Mugabe is one of the only sons of Africa who deserves to be called by the name 'an African statesman'.
"He is cut from the same cloth with late African fathers Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere and I don't know if there are any among other African leaders we can add and liken to the three," he said.
Cde Mutasa said he was appreciative of Nigerian businesspeople in Zimbabwe who have continued to do business in the country despite the tough economic conditions experienced over the past decade.
