Moroccan Conjoined Twins Separated After Marathon Surgery Of Shared Organs
22 June 2009
RIYADH: A multidisciplinary team led by Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah successfully separated the Moroccan conjoined twins Azizah and Saeeda following a marathon surgery lasting 11 hours and 15 minutes at the King Fahd Medical City (KAMC) yesterday. The two infants were laid in separate beds at 6.30 p.m. yesterday and the surgical team was divided into two groups to attend to them separately for reconstruction surgery. The seven-phase surgical process ended at 8.30 p.m. “The surgeons did not encounter any difficulties during the whole operation,” a public relations officer at KAMC told Arab News, adding that each phase was on schedule. Parents of the twins were very happy when they saw their conjoined babies separated via monitors displayed outside the operation theater. On completion of the surgery, the twins were moved to the intensive care unit where a team of pediatricians will monitor them for 24 hours. The twins were brought to the operation theater at 7.15 a.m. and it took nearly an hour to anesthetize them. Surgeons started the separation of the exposed side of the twins’ skin and abdomen wall muscles as well as conjoined ribs. The liver was separated at 3.30 p.m. It took one hour and 45 minutes to identify the anatomy of their biliary tract and pancreas, which were joined to each other. The bowel was separated at 6.05 p.m. The twins, who shared a liver, pancreas and the upper part of their intestine, were brought to the Kingdom for surgical separation from Morocco on the instructions of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. Based on pre-surgical tests, the multidisciplinary team, which conducted a rehearsal of the operation on Wednesday, had estimated a 70 percent chance of success. Azizah and Saeeda are the third set of Moroccan twins to be separated in the Kingdom. So far, Saudi Arabia has conducted 22 successful separations of conjoined twins.
