Iran’s Expediency Council Urges Candidates to Cooperate with Electoral Body
27 June 2009
Iran's top political arbitration body on Saturday urged all candidates in the presidential election to fully cooperate with the country's electoral body, ISNA news agency reported. The Expediency Council "asks all candidates to cooperate with the Guardians Council and to use this appropriate opportunity ... and submit their documents and evidence for a comprehensive and precise examination," a statement said. The Expediency Council, which also serves as an advisory body to the supreme leader, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, is headed by powerful cleric and former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. The statement said observing the law and pursuing the issue through relevant channels were the best and the most appropriate way to remove suspicions, conflicts and disputes concerning the election. It also "strongly" urged the Guardians Council to "precisely examine all objections and complaints and respond to suspicions," using an appropriate team of experts, in order to create the "necessary trust in society." However, the candidates from Iran's presidential election have yet to name representatives to a panel charged with conducting a partial recount just hours before the deadline, electoral watchdog the Guardians Council said on Saturday. "As far as I know and as far as the media has said, they have not forwarded the names of their representatives who are supposed to be part of the panel to supervise the recount," the watchdog's spokesman Abbasali Kadkhodai told the Mehr news agency. On Friday evening, Kadkhodai had said the candidates had 24 hours to name their representatives to the panel recounting some ballots from the June 12 election. On Saturday, one of the defeated candidates, Mohsen Rezai, said he was prepared to serve on the panel and called on his fellow losers, opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, to join him.
