Lebanon’s Almustaqbal: If We Win We Will Accept Partnership, Not The Obstructing Third
1 June 2009
Almustaqbal Movement leader MP Saad Hariri said that if March 14 won the majority in the upcoming elections they would accept partnership in the cabinet but would deny the minority the obstructing third vote. “Lebanon is the country of coexistence and harmony between Muslims and Christians, and I believe the obstruction third is an implicit project to achieve the tripartite,” he said, hailing the president’s interference in the constitutional council appointments, “if it wasn’t for the president, the problem would have remained unsettled,” Almustaqbal leader noted. In an interview with Al-Jazeera network on Wednesday, Hariri confirmed, “As a minority we would not participate in the cabinet and we would form an opposition bloc. This is how I see democracy.” “We should not be considered weak when we smother the fire of sedition; weakness is pointing arms against our fellow brothers,” he argued. Hariri added, “We don’t mind amending the Taëf Accord in favor of granting the president more powers, but after we implement the accord in full” affirming that the Lebanese will respond to May 7 deadly events on June 7. “Our dispute with Hizbullah is political; therefore building partnership with them is unlikely in a country where the state is unable to control war and peace decisions. Any political dispute must be kept within the Constitution and states’ institutions, and shall not be dragged to the streets, to avoid sectarian unrest in the country,” he asserted. Hariri stressed “There are many things and decisions in common with Hizbullah and the March 8 coalition. “We all formed the 2005 government, but at the same time we disagree on other issues like the Special Tribunal and the problem that occurred after July 2006 war. There is major political dispute between March 8 and March 14 based on the political internal affairs and the national interests,” he noted. On international and Arab relations, he said, “We don’t have any problem with the US or any of the European countries, and we seek normal relations based on equality between Syria and Lebanon, especially after establishing diplomatic ties.” Hariri was shocked by the speech delivered by the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hinting to the opposition victory in the elections, and asked: What is the meaning of his statement? Hariri refused accusing others of treason or adherence. Hariri hailed the new US administration and its reach-out policy towards Iran, Syria and all the Arab states in which it attempts to negotiate over past pending issues. Syria and especially Iran were both positively engaged in the US negotiations campaign. He lauded the US administration calls to achieve peace in the Middle East and the world, and reiterated Biden aspiration to realize just peace between Israel and Palestine. Hariri noted “there are those who betray you and those who curse you…we have never betrayed anyone.” Asked about his project to boost the economic, Hariri said “we have submitted a project to revive the economy and grant the citizen their right to be the first beneficiary of the national State, and we seek in our detailed socio-economic program to create job opportunities and move the developmental projects forward. He added “We have a project and are able to implement the Paris III conference. This majority realized Lebanon’s freedom, independence and sovereignty, and sacrificed the blood of Rafic Hariri and the other martyrs to accomplish it. " Hariri asked "Did Beirut airport existed before 1992? Did we have Electricity, water and telephone networks? They accuse us of corruption which is a lie, and they always talked about the public debt, are all the crises and wars that engulfed the country costless?" “The Syrian regime is the source behind all the fabrications, lies and corruptions,” he said. Hariri confirmed that June 7 is drawing near, and the Lebanese are bound to decide who will rule them. On his relationship with Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt, he reiterated the alliance with the PSP and said “Walid Jumblatt was and will remain a devoted supporter to Almustaqbal and to martyr Rafic Hariri as he was before his assassination. On the Special Tribunal decision to detain and afterwards release the four generals in the case of the assassination of Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, he said, “We didn’t have any role and we did not interfere in any measure taken by the Special Tribunal and the investigation commission.” He confirmed that “if the Special Tribunal acquitted Syria then we would accept this decision. I am reassured by the course of the tribunal’s work. I ask also that all Lebanese accept the decisions of the STL.” “Last week Hizbullah official TV station reported that "Cheney was involved in Rafic Hariri assassination" isn’t this project meant to stir sedition. I have already refused to comment on Der Spiegel report because it would serve Israel and Syria’s interests,” he noted. Hariri added “the report published by the German newspaper (Der Spiegel) does not score electoral goals for our favor, and no Lebanese would believe that Rafic Hariri was assassinated by a fellow Lebanese”. He reiterated that everyone should realize the importance of this electoral battle for the economic and political future of Lebanon and its influence in the coming generations on freedom and coexistence.” Hariri called on all the Lebanese citizens to cast their votes freely on June 7 “because every citizen has the right to practice his political right whether he was with or against me,” he stressed. Hariri concluded by affirming that Almustaqbal Movement is the only party in Lebanon whose supporters include all the Lebanese sects and religions, and the movement participates in the elections based on a political, economic and development program away from sectarianism and confessionalism.”
