Hariri Voices Alliance With Islamic Jamaa oF Sheikh Faisal Al-Mawlawi
8 June 2009
Almustaqbal chief, MP Saad Hariri visited Wednesday Islamic Jamaa Secretary General, Sheikh Faisal Al-Mawlawi, to stress alliance between Future Movement and the Jamaa. Beirut MP, Hariri asserted in remarks following the meeting that the purpose of the visit was to “check on the Sheikh’s health after I became aware of his being in poor health. Thank God he is recovering. I also wanted to confirm the alliance with Islamic Jamaa.” Hariri believes the two political movements follow the same political guidelines of moderation and reconstruction. It should be noted that Islamic Jamaa is allied with Future Movement in all districts and has consequently withdrew its candidate from western Bekaa-Rachaya in the movement’s favor. Hariri, who is running for the Sunni seat in Beirut’s third district next to Jamaa’s Imad el-Hout, asserted that the Jamaa “represents moderate Islam. Our movement is particularly allied with the Islamic Jamaa in Tripoli, where other fundamental factions are running as Islamists.” He pointed that there is no alliance in Tripoli with the Democratic Arab Party of Ali Eid, running for the Alawite seat in the district. “The Alawite sect is an integral part of Akkar and Tripoli. Although there is a political difference with them, we fully respect the sect,” reminding that he is allied with MP Badr Wannous and Ambassador Khodor Habib, both Alawites running in Tripoli. He defended “if we want to act according to sects and religions and not according to the Taif Agreement, we would destroy Lebanon and justified “they don’t support the Special Tribunal for Lebanon neither do they support out political strategies. This is why no alliance with them is possible.” Earlier today, MP Hariri called the partisans and followers of Almustaqbal movement in Iklim el Kharroub region to vote for ‘March 14’ coalition’s list in Chouf with all its members. A statement issued by MP Hariri’s media bureau said: MP Hariri calls all followers and supporters of Almustaqbal movement in Iklim el Kharroub to vote for the Chouf list with all its members, and to consider that each candidate not enrolled in the list does not represent the will of Almustaqbal movement or the approach of its leader. Hariri had asked earlier all candidates of Almustaqbal movement in the district to pull out from elections if their candidature conflicted with the alliances of the movement.
