Meanwhile, unaffected by the death of the wife of Nigeria's arguably most corrupt leader ever, Wife of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Hajiya Zainab Adamu Aliero Tuesday flagged -off a three-day skills acquisition training workshop for the less privileged women at Abaji Area Council. She disclosed that the programme is meant to boost levels of women empowerment, wealth creation and reliance in Abaji Area Council of the FCT. Hajiya Aliero said the FCT Administration is concerned about the effect of the global economic meltdown on its people and decided to cushion its crushing effects by ensuring that women, mostly affected, can fend for themselves in these difficult times. "It is a question of don't give me fish but teach me how to fish as we believe that if we teach the women of the FCT how to fish, we would have contributed meaningfully in banishing poverty," the minister's wife reasoned. She disclosed further that the FCT Administration through the Social Development Secretariat has engaged the services of core professionals and resource persons to train the less privileged women at the grassroots, especially those living with HIV/AIDS, widows and the physically challenged. According to her, participants of the skill acquisition traning program will be taught various skills that will enable them fend for themselves as well as giving certificates in their respective fields of training at the end of the three-day sessions. Earlier speaking, Acting Chairman of Abaji Area Council, Alhaji Muhammad A.B. Adamu informed the minister's wife that one of the council administration's policy thrust is the empowerment of women and less privileged people in the council. "Owing to this fact, when we came on board, we swung into action by immediately renovating the women development centre and the expansion of the centre with additional structure to accommodate more women and the less privileged as well as engage them in different activities such as literacy classes, home economics, tailoring, knitting and local weaving. "Over 50 sewing machines have been supplied to the centre, with the administration establishing an ICT Centre with over 50 computer sets and internet facilities," the acting chairman added. He revealed further that the centre gives priority to over 60 percent women trainees, while large sum of money in the 2009 Budget are to be disbursed to women in the council as soft loans in order to assist them in their micro-economic activities.
