National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) May Not Increase Hajj Fare After All
8 June 2009
As the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) opened tender of 12 air carriers' bid for participation in this years' hajj operation, indications have emerged that this year's fare may not change. Majority of those who participated in last year's hajj operation, have proposed to airlift pilgrims with the same amount as last year, while some even quoted less than what they charged during the 2008 exercise. The 12 air carriers include Dala Air Service, Emirate International Air, Emirate Touch Air Service, Hamsal Air Service, Kabo Air Limited, Max Airlines, Med view, Nice Air, Mahan Air, Meridian Airline, Sky power Express and Trade Craft Air who is in collaboration with Air Nyami. The highest proposal was $2000 for pilgrims from north, and $2200 for pilgrims from south. The second category proposed $1900 for each pilgrim from north, while $1950 each for pilgrims from the south. On the other hand Mangal Air, now renamed "Max Airline" is to charge $1800 for north and $1900 for the southern pilgrims, while Emirate International Air, also proposed $1900 far pilgrims. Med View charged the same amount $1700 and $1750, as last year. Kabo Air Limited, and Trade Craft/Air Nyami proposed $1600 for north and $1650 for the south respectively. The lowest bidder among the 12 air carriers is Meridian Airline which proposed $1500 for northern pilgrims and $1600 for southern pilgrims. Commenting, the Special Assistant to the president on Aviation, Captain Shehu Usman Iyal stated that "President Umaru Yar'adua has promised that the government and he in person will continue to support Hajj operation in Nigeria and to give assistance where ever possible to make it a total success."
