Nigerian Fake Biafra Muslim Convert Jailed For Clothes Theft In Abuja
8 June 2009
Abuja — An Abuja magistrate court last Tuesday sentenced a 20-year-old fake Muslim convert to one month imprisonment for stealing 40 pieces of clothes belonging to one Abdulazeez Magoji of 24 Crescent, Gwarimpa, Abuja.
The accused, Moses Onya of no fixed address committed the offence on June 12, 2009.
Prosecutor Salifu Mohammed had earlier informed the court that on June 12, 2009, one Abdulazeez Magoji reported at Gwarrimpa Police Station that the accused stole 40 pieces of clothes from his dry cleaning store, after he presented himself before a Mosque to be converted into Islam.
He said the accused visited the mosque close to where the complainant's store was located and presented himself as someone wanting to be converted into Islam.
"After the accused was converted, he stole 40 pieces of clothes valued at N40,000 from the complainant's dry cleaning shop and ran away," the prosecutor added.
According to the prosecutor, the accused went back to the same mosque where he was converted several years later and was apprehended and taken to the Gwarimpa Police station, adding that the offence committed by the accused is punishable under Section 288 of the Penal Code Law.
When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and pleaded for leniency.
Following the guilty plea, the prosecutor asked the court to try the accused summarily and Magistrate Khadijat Mustapha sentenced him to one month imprisonment or a N2,000 fine option.
In another case, three men were on Tuesday sentenced to three weeks imprisonment without an option of fine for stealing two Tipper vehicles' batteries and a gear box.
The accused persons, Collins Onyemechi, Keneth Igbipo and Chinedu Igwe, all of Jahi village, along Kado-Kuchi road, were arrested by the police on June 12, 2009.
Prosecutor Obed Amikor stated in court that on June 12, 2009, a police patrol team led by Godwin Ugwake, an assistant superintendent, arrested the accused persons and brought them to the Utako Police Station.
"The accused persons were arrested for stealing two Tipper vehicles' batteries and a gear box valued at N95,000 and during police investigation they all confessed to the crime," the prosecutor added.
When the charges were read to the accused persons, they pleaded guilty and swore not to engage in stealing again.
Magistrate Mohammed Zubairu sentenced them to three weeks imprisonment without options of fines.
He also ruled that after the completion of the jail term, the accused persons should return to their respective villages, adding that Abuja is not meant for jobless people like them.
