English Language In Teaching Hampers Learning Process In Nigeria
20 June 2009
Former presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa has said that using English Language in teaching had a negative consequence on the learning process.
Briefing newsmen on the forthcoming launch of his new books, Tofa said that local languages should be highly encouraged in schools as children easily get knowledge in their native languages
Tofa said that most of the Asian countries have adopted the use of their native languages instead of foreign languages as adopted by Nigeria and other less developed countries.
He noted that such was the reasons why most of his literary works were written in Hausa. "I do this to encourage people to read and to also encourage the development of our local language," he said.
Tofa revealed that despite being businessman and politician, writing was his hobby. "I enjoy writing as a hubby and I always find time to write despite my pressing engagements," said the writer.
The politician-cum-writer therefore noted that the eight books he would launch next week were written on different topics. According to the writer, he has captured religious, scientific, real, imaginary and humorous scenarios in the eight books.
Nigeria Corruption is Lack of Integrity
Meanwhile, the ICPC said on Thursday in Abuja that corruption was lack of integrity and discipline. The commission made this known in its quarterly publication. It blamed corruption among public officers on greed and indiscipline.
According to the publication, leadership of organisations are responsible for endemic corruption. "Corruption is lack of integrity and it is nothing but greed that leads to it. It said if the person at the top was corrupt, there was the likelihood that those under him too would be. "His subordinates will be corrupt because those at the helm of affairs will have no moral courage to stop them from indulging in the vice. "The subordinates of the public office holders believe that if the leaders can do it and get away with it, then it must be right," it said. (NAN).
