Anti-Corruption Says Yar'Adua's Wife To Remain In Prison Till Monday
24 June 2009
Abuja — Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Gudu has adjourned ruling on the bail application by Asabe Shehu Yar'Adua who claimed to be wife to the late Gen. Sheu Musa Yar'Adua to June 29.
She is to remain in prison custody until the determination of the application. Justice Abubakar Talba also ordered that Asabe's co-accused, Lilian Anyanwu, be remanded in custody.
A statement from Head of Media and Publicity of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Femi Babafemi, on Tuesday said the two accused persons and one Ibrahim Gaya who is still at large, were early in June arraigned before the court on a three-count charge of impersonation and seeking to obtain money by false pretence.
The suspects were said to have in May conspired to obtain money from the Comptroller General of Customs in Abuja by false pretence and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 8(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.
"In one of the charges, the 1st accused person was alleged to have falsely presented herself as the wife of the late Major General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, former Chief of Army Staff, Supreme Headquarters, in the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo in her attempt to hoodwink the Comptroller General of Customs," the statement said.
It added that when the matter came up on Monday, counsel to the EFCC, Peter Aso, told the court that he was only served the bail motion by counsel to the accused persons on June 18 and therefore asked the court to grant him the statutory 48 hours to respond.
