Nigerian Sultan Of Sokoto Seeks Implementation of Jos Crisis Panel Reports
26 June 2009
Lagos — Sultan of Sokoto, Dr Sa'ad Abubakar III, has called for implementation of reports of various panels probing ethno-religious crises in Jos and its environs.
Sultan made the call when he received the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Buba , in his palace in Sokoto, yesterday.
"The crises in Jos are still on until all various panels come out to tell us what happened and punish those responsible. The crises persist because people who took laws into their hands were never punished. Justice must be done, irrespective of religion or ethnicity, he said.
"The Sultan commended the Gbong Gwom and declared support for his efforts to restore peace in Plateau and Nigeria, saying, "your enthronement has strengthened the nation's traditional institutions. Gbong Gwom is on the right course because he has started well and means well to ensure that peace and justice are brought to Plateau and Nigeria."
He has been going round the country to preach peace. So everybody must support his drive to ensure a Plateau and Nigeria where peace and justice reign supreme," he said and condemned the acts of refering to people as "foreigners" in their own country and urged other states to emulate Sokoto where everybody is accepted, no matter his ethnic or religious affiliations.
Earlier, Buba condemned the past ethno-religious crises that had bedevilled Plateau and other parts of the country and restated his determination to partner with traditional rulers in the country to restore peace not only in Plateau, but in the entire country.
Former President Shehu Shagari was among those who received the Gbong Gwom at the Sultan's palace.
