Somalia’s Islamist Government Claims Victory Over Fighting in Mogadishu

Mogadishu — Somali government has claimed victory over fighting with Islamist insurgents in the Somali capital Mogadishu, officials said on Wednesday. Fierce fighting between government soldiers and Islamist insurgents has been continuing in the capital for the last three weeks. At least 25 people have been killed and more than 70 people, mostly civilians, have been injured on Tuesday and Wednesday's fighting. The information minister of the Somali government, Farhan Ali Mohamoud, held a press conference in Mogadishu and said that the government soldiers gained victory over the fighting in the capital and captured two police stations from the rebel forces. The minister said Hisbul Islam and Harakat Al Shabab fighters took off their clothes and ran away to far regions in the country and that some of them were planning to surrender. He also condemned the gunmen who abducted Universal TV journalist in Mogadishu. Ibrahim Jekey, the director of Universal TV office in Mogadishu was kidnapped by masked gunmen armed with pistols late on Tuesday in KM 13 village outside Mogadishu. Government Soldiers Recapture Yaqshid Police Station Somalia's government said Wednesday it has recaptured Yaqshid district police station in north Mogadishu after they launched a heavy counter attack on Hizbul Islam forces. At least nine civilians have been killed and sixty others have been injured in Wednesday's fighting in Mogadishu. Hizbul Islam forces who are fighting against the fragile government seized the police station on Wednesday morning. Muhiddin Hassan Juris, Yaqshid district commissioner told local media that the government soldiers managed to retake large areas from Hisbul Islam including the contested police station. Fighting between government soldiers and Hizbul Islam forces has been continuing in Yaqshid district for the last four days. On the other hand, Harakat Al- Shabab claimed victory over the fighting in the capital. Sheik Ali Mohamed Hussein Al-Shabab,s governor of Bandir region said they gained victory over the fighting. He said that they have killed 10 government soldiers in Dharkeynley district in Mogadishu and captured 6 others. He also said that they have destroyed AMISOM vehicle and killed the soldiers on board, but there is no independent sources confirming on this. Government Officials Explain Their Arrival in Beledweyn Town Abdikarin Farah Laqanyo, one of the government officials who reached in Beledweyn town in central Somalia yesterday has explained their arrival in the town on Wednesday and said that they reached the town to play good role for the peace and protect intimidations against the people. Mr. Laqanyo said that the government wants to protect people he pointed out that they threaten to the people in the town saying that the government desires the Sharia law to be ruled in the country. He said that they are also part of troops heading to some of the southern regions of Somalia like Bay, Bakol and Gedo adding that their main aim is to make the region peace. Asked about the possibility they want to face those plans, knowing that there is a great deadlock between the government and its opposition, Laqanyo replied that the government had already called for Somalis to sit the table of the dialogue and approved the Sharia law to be ruled in the country. Officials from Harakat Al-shabab Mujahideen and Hisbul Islam had already accused those members that they were organizing tribal war in Hiran region and the statement comes as more government soldiers led some of the government officials reached in Beledweyn town in central Somalia.
