Allies Rally Round Zuma Early To Rule More Than One Term
4 June 2009
Jacob Zuma has told Cosatu he will serve two full terms as president, according to the labour federation. Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi on Thursday said the federation had met Zuma to get clarity on his previous statement that he wanted to serve only one term as the country's president. "We have engaged with him on that issue and it's no longer on the table. He's no longer going to be a one-term president. "(Zuma) will run the full course of the journey. Two terms, and no discussions about it - and we are very happy," Vavi said. The Cosatu leader said the issue of succession was no longer under discussion within the federation. "We've closed that chapter of divisions in the organisation. The issue of succession in the federation doesn't even arise. "We know that people are quite ambitious out there, but that discussion is not arising in 2012 as far as we are concerned," Vavi said after Cosatu's central executive committee meeting in Joburg. Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale was recently reported as urging Zuma to stay in office for two terms. However, some alliance partners felt it was up to the ANC - not Zuma - to decide. Vavi said the tripartite alliance would be more united when the ANC holds its next elective conference in 2012, as it was at the party's Polokwane conference in 2007 that Zuma was elected ANC president. "We are going into this congress far better united than at any other time," he added. Vavi said the alliance would determine policy. "We are the policymakers in the alliance, and the government implements. The government does not lead anymore. "I heard about people complaining about Zuma being a stooge of people in Luthuli (House). That's exactly how it should be. "He (Zuma) is the president of the ANC, and the ANC is in charge, and never again should we allow the country to be led by the government in that narrow sense," said Vavi. Jessie Duarte, the ANC spokesperson, said the issue of succession and whether Zuma would serve two terms had never been discussed within the ANC, although she said "we want our president to remain in his position for a very long time". "The ANC is guided by the branches at our conferences, which take place every five years. "We can't make predictions at this stage, even though it would be desirable to do so," said Duarte.
