Tanzanian Muslim Body Appoints Team to Engage Government On Shariah Courts

The Citizen, Dar es Salaam -- The National Muslim Council of Tanzania, Bakwata, has named a committee which will hold discussions with the Government to find possibilities of establishing the Kadhi court in the country. A press release issued yesterday by the Bakwata secretary general, Mr Suleiman Lolila, said the 25-member committee will be chaired by the Tanzania Mufti Issa Shabaan Simba. He said the committee is composed of experts on Islamic laws, advocates and other experts from social sectors. "The committee has only one aim of ensuring the establishment of the Kadhi court in the country. Outlines of what is to be discussed are ready and just waiting for the Government,"he said. Formation of the committee was made after Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda met Mufti Simba and a team of Muslim leaders. They agreed to form two committees: one from the Government and another of Muslims. It will advise the Governnent on better ways to establish the Kadhi court which has attracted much public attention. Members of the Bakwata team include Messrs Lolila, Ismail Habibu, Taufiq Malilo, Fereji Hassan, Alhaj Musa, Abdallah Nyasi, Mohamed Said and Abdallah Matumla. Others are Sheikh Suleiman Kilemile from the Islamic society, Abubakar Zubeir (Salafiya), Hamid Jongo (Manyema masjid), Muharam Dogga (Al-haramain), Twalib Ahamed (Maamur Masjid) and two lawyers, Yahya Njama and Issa Maige. Also in the team are Sheikh Juma Pori (Answar Suna), Abdallah Bawazir (Kiblateni masjid) Mussa Kundecha (Muslim council and institutions) as well as representatives of Shia, Sunni, Bohora, Istiqama, Abdalla Ndaga (International Islamic Relief Organisation).
