Uganda: Masaka Police Arrest Three People for Beating Khadhi
23 July 2009
Masaka — Police in Masaka have arrested three Muslims who allegedly assaulted the ousted District Kadhi Sheikh Huzairu Kiruuta and four others as they attempted to enter the Muslim district offices last week at Masaka main mosque. Sheikh Abdullar Mutazindwa, Mustafa Kasule and Haruna Mulindwa were arrested after Sheikh Kiruuta filed a police case against them. The three suspects were taken to Masaka central police under tight security and detained over charges of assault. Sheikh Kiruuta claims that last week on Thursday, a group of Muslims under the leadership of the newly chairman of Masaka district Muslim council Sheikh Ismail Musisi beat him up and other four Muslims loyal to the embattled Mufti Shaban Mubajje and injured them before they were rushed to Masaka Hospital for treatment. The Southern Region CID Officer, William Panuha said the three suspects will be taken to court before the Chief Magistrate and answer charges against them. The district Muslim council headed by Sheikh Ismail Musisi dismissed Sheikh Kiruuta last month accusing him of being a dictator, corruption, failure to call council meetings and old age that could not enable him deliver as expected. However, the ousted district Kadhi yesterday sacked Sheikh Ahamed Kayemba, the secretary general Masaka district Muslim council and replaced him with Hajj Jamiru Kiyila at a meeting held at Laston Hotel in Masaka town. Five county representatives were also replaced.
