Ugandan Muslims Mufti Crisis: Six Mubajje Supporters Granted Bail
8 July 2009
Kampala — SIX supporters of Mufti Sheikh Ramathan Mubajje were on Thursday released on bail by the Mbarara chief magistrate, Baker Rwatoro. They are facing charges of malicious damage and inciting violence, holding an illegal gathering, conspiracy to kill some members of Nyamitanga Muslim community and to damage property. Abas Serwada, Wilson Katureebe, Hassan Rajjabu, Muhamed Gayiira, Muhammed Mponye and Sheikh Muhammed Karunzi, allegedly on May 22, damaged the mosque and tents of Nyamitanga Muslim community. The Mbale district Kadhi, who represented Mubajje, stood surety for the suspects. They were asked to report to court every two weeks. Meanwhile, Kayongo's supporters survived arrest for disrupting court proceedings. "These are your fellow Muslims. Why should you shout in court like that? It is a constitutional right for every person to get bail. "If you behave like that, how will you convince people to join your faith," Rwatoro told the rowdy Muslims. The suspects were part of a group that attempted to block the visit of Kibuli-based rival mufti, Sheikh Zubair Kayongo who addressed hundreds of Muslims at Nyamitanga in May. Gayira and Mponye, were severely beaten up by Kayongo's supporters and admitted to Mbarara Hospital. The Police rushed in to quell the violence.
