Yahya Jammeh Gambian State House Mosque Committee Weeds Farm
27 July 2009
The Daily Observer (Banjul) - In response to the "Back to the Land" call initiated by Sheikh Professor Dr Alhagie Yahya Jammeh, the State House mosque committee led by Alhagie Ba-Sainey Camara, Amir of the mosque, over the weekend embarked on the weeding of a 6-hectare coos farm located at Kerr Touby in the Upper Niumi District. Speaking to the Daily Observer at the farm, Amir Alhagie Ba-Sainey Camara said the move was in response to the Gambian leader's call. Amir Ba-Sainey noted that people must understand that farming is part of "our culture and must not be abandoned". According to him, this year, the committee had acquired two big farms in Yundum and Kerr Toubey in Niumi. He said the proceeds gained from these farms over the past few years were donated to the needy people and patients, mostly at the RVTH, with part being used during their annual 'Gamo'. For his part, Alhagie Seedia Ceesay, deputy imam of the State House mosque, who is also the vice principal of Tallinding Arabic Institute, spoke on the signifance of farming and hard work in general. He noted that without work nothing is possible. Imam Ceesay used the occasion to thank President Jammeh for spearheading the initiative. Alieu Mbye, the committee's farm manager, hailed President Jammeh for leading by example. Gambian President Jammeh Presided Over a Cultural Jamboree The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, last Saturday evening presided over a cultural jamboree at the July 22nd Square in Banjul, as part of activities marking the 15th anniversary celebration of the July 22nd Revolution. The event, which was also punctuated by a fireworks display, had in attendance the vice president and minister of Women's Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, the speaker of the National Assembly, Honourable Elizabeth Renner, ministers, National Assembly members, senior government officials, and other dignitaries. Attended by thousands of Gambians, the cultural night attracted artists from both The Gambia and Senegal. It featured the country's Kora maestro, Jaliba Kuyateh and the Kumareh Band, whose appearance on the stage did not only dominate the activities of the night, but also went a long way in defining the success of the event. Among the artists who took to the stage were Musa Ngum, one of The Gambia's Ndaga super stars; the Five Star Band; Musa Trawally and Papa Njie Thiopet, both Ndaga stars from Senegal. The event also featured various cultural troupes. Among them were the famous Kabakel and Kayon-Kayong cultural troupes, Banjul City Council and the Green cultural dance groups. The cultural night also provided the opportunity for the artists and various cultural groups to express their profound gratitude to The Gambian leader for his keen interest in the revival of culture in the country, as well as the promotion and empowerment of Gambian musicians. The president's interest in this regard is attested to by the fact that he has personally assisted scores of Gambian musicians, thereby boosting the growth and development of their careers. His intervention in the country's music industry has advanced it to a higher level, and this has encouraged many young Gambians to explore their talents with a view to becoming great artists in the future.
