Gaddafi Pan African Agenda Taking Part in G8 Summit, Present African View
9 July 2009
The Leader of the Revolution and current President of the African Union arrived in Rome on Wednesday to take part in the G8 Summit which is taking place in the central Italian city of L'Aquila. Gaddafi will attend as the representative of the African Union and will present the case of Africa and how it should be treated by great powers. He has for a long time called on these powers to pay respect to the African continent and its people who suffered so much as a result of Western colonialism. Last year, Gaddafi demanded that Europe pay at least ten billion euros to be used for economic development if illegal immigration from African countries is to be brought to halt. He said Africans were migrating to Europe because they were following their own wealth that was taken away from them by imperialists and colonizers and somehow they must be compensated. Gaddafi was invited to the summit by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi during the latter’s visit to Libya. Berlusconi said at the time Africa had started to speak with one voice, thanks to the establishment of the African Union on the hands of Muammar Gaddafi. On July 3 and in the Libyan city of Sirte, the African Union further strengthened its power by establishing the Union’s “Authority”, another milestone towards a united, stronger and prosperous Africa. Gaddafi said in a closing speech after the African Union summit, which he hosted in Sirte: “We have decided to create an Authority that will speak with a single voice in the name of Africa,” Gaddafi said. “We are beginning in earnest a new stage. Those who do not submit to the will of Africa will pay the price, because we will not have pity on them,” he added. Gaddafi also reiterated “the right of the African continent” to a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Gaddafi is planning an extraordinary African Union summit on September 1, focusing on conflicts across the continent. “This summit will not only examine conflicts and crises across Africa, but will also take binding decisions,” he said. On Wednesday night, Gaddafi toured the city of Rome and mingled with tourists and visited a number of shops in the downtown.
