Libyan President Ghaddafi Wraps-Up Visit To Gambian Semi-Islamist Yahya Jammeh
28 July 2009
The Daily Observer (Banjul) - After a three-day visit to the Republic of The Gambia, where he served as a special guest of the Gambian leader, semi-Islamist Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the July 22nd Revolution, Brother Colonel Muamar Al Ghaddafi, leader of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, last Friday, left Banjul for Tripoli, Libya. Before reaching the Banjul International Airport, the leader of the Libyan Al-Fatah Revolution, who is also the 'King of African Traditional Kings' and the chairman of the African Union (AU), Muamar Al-Ghaddafi, visited President Jammeh's Nerica Rice farm in Farato, Kombo North. The Libyan leader joined the women in weeding the Nerica rice for a while before taking the crowd by surprise by driving one of the tractors at the farm. Brother Muamar Al-Ghaddafi was later joined by his host and counterpart, President Jammeh, the Gambian leader. The two heads of states later left for the Banjul International Airport, where the Libyan leader bade farewell to Gambians. Speaking to journalists shortly before taking his flight at the foot of the aircraft, the Libyan leader said, "I feel I am at home, The Gambia and Libya are the same." And he added, "We had excellent relations even before I paid this visit." Brother Muamar Ghaddafi observed that his visit will not only pave way for investment in various sectors, but it will also strengthen the cooperation between the two countries. "I am satisfied with the relationship between The Gambia and Libya," Ghaddafi concluded. The Gambian leader, President Yahya Jammeh, thanked the Gambian people for the warm welcome accorded the Libyan leader. He said, "I am proud of Gambians. I am proud of the youths; it was yesterday (last Thursday) that they demonstrated that we as Gambians can move the country forward and that we are united. And that's the most important thing because whatever we do is for the young people of this country. The future is in the hands of the youths. So whatever we do today is in their interest. I am very proud of every Gambian because people have come out in their large numbers, from Kartong to Koina, to witness the July 22nd Revolution celebrations." Commenting on the issue of certain groups who couldn't have the chance to march at the July 22nd celebrations in Banjul, President Jammeh said, "I felt very bad about the fact that some groups did not have the chance to march. So I offer my apology."
