Hariri’s Visit To Syria After The Cabinet Formation, Ordinary
6 July 2009
Nohad Mashnouk of the Almustaqbal parliamentary bloc has said designating MP Saad Hariri for premiership is the prelude for inter-Lebanese reconciliation and that his visit to Syria after the cabinet formation is ordinary. “The designation of Hariri for premiership marks the beginning of reconciliation among the Lebanese factions and his visit to Syria after the cabinet formation is ordinary,” Mashnouk told the Al-Anbaa Kuwaiti newspaper. “The minority will not be given veto powers in the next cabinet and the majority will not have two thirds of the cabinet. The balance of power will be in the hands of the president of the republic. “There are no serious obstacles facing the cabinet formation and the issue is moving toward solution. “The special thing about this cabinet is that it is being formed while the Lebanese-Syrian relations are being remodeled. “The Prime Minister is entitled to represent all the Lebanese and not only a specific faction and to normalize the Lebanese- Syrian relations as part of its relations with all the Arab countries. “It is the first time in the past ten years that the Lebanese, particularly Democratic Gathering leader Walid Jumblatt, expects Syria to play a positive role in the cabinet formation.” Mashnouk denounced the “media fuss over Hariri’s expected visit to Syria which is nothing more than a protocol visit.” He referred to the caretaking government Premier “Fouad Siniora’s visit to Damascus when he was assigned for premiership which came during a far more difficult situation than it is currently. Hariri’s visit must mean a lot to Syria at least in the sense of alleviating political tension between the two countries that started 10 years ago when former president Emille Lahoud received office. “The visit does not mean a Syrian victory over the March 14 coalition and the Cedars revolution, nor is an attempt to impose a new de-facto on the Lebanese arena but it simply aims at putting the relations between the two countries on the right track. “Premier designate had reiterated accusing Syria of killing his late father martyr Rafic Hariri is a political accusation and is of no judicial nature and he is going to visit Syria as a premier and not as a member of the Hariri family or the March 14 coalition. “Holding discussions with the Almustaqbal Movement popular base is a must in order to convince it with the necessity of Hariri’s visit being an essential requirement for stability in the country.” Mashnouk called for “recommencing national dialogue within the parliament which is the natural place for political discourse.” Saudi-Syrian rapprochement not at Lebanon’s expense National Liberals leader Dori Chamoun has said the Saudi-Syrian rapprochement would not be at the expense of Lebanon and would return Syria to the Arab track, Ad-Diyar newspaper reported Monday. “The Saudi-Syrian rapprochement would not be at the expense of Lebanon and would return Syria to the Arab track,” Chamoun told the paper. He described the cabinet formation as “local dish.” “The minority will not be granted veto powers in the next cabinet because this practice is against the constitution,” he said. “Since the Lebanese-Syrian diplomatic relations were established, we have nothing against Premier designate Saad Hariri’s visit to Syria,” he maintained. “If reconciliation with Syria is in Lebanon’s favor, the Christians welcome it because we hold to the ‘Lebanon First’ Slogan,” he added. “The role of President Michel Sleiman will be fortified when he restores the powers that were taken from him by the Taëf Agreement (which diminished the jurisdictions of the president of the republic) which enables him to hold the balance of power within the cabinet,” he said. Chamoun hoped that “the performance of House Speaker Nabih Berry becomes better after he closed the parliament for a long time during his previous term.”
