Saudi-Syrian Rapprochement Is Essential For Cabinet Formation
9 July 2009
Democratic Gathering parliamentary bloc leader Walid Jumblatt has reiterated his support for Syrian-Saudi rapprochement to form the new government amid international and regional efforts to thwart this dialogue. Jumblatt, Progressive Socialist Party leader, told the As-Safir newspaper: “The Syrian-Saudi rapprochement is necessary for the formation of the new government; however some international and regional countries exert efforts to prevent such a dialogue. On the meeting he held Wednesday with the Maronite Patriarch Mar Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, Jumblatt said: “I was willing to pay the Patriarch a visit a long time ago. I found the right opportunity to do so.” He told the minority’s Al-Akhbar newspaper, “I told the patriarch the details and impediments facing the formation of the new cabinet. We discussed the regional situation and the significance of the Saudi-Syrian rapprochement to form the government since there are regional and international interferences that aim to thwart such a dialogue.” PSP leader commented on the statements announced by the Israeli President Shimon Perez he said: “Perez uncovered his real face and intentions when he adopted Netanyahu-Lieberman and Ben-Gurion’s theories to establish a Jewish state that strikes the Palestinian’s right to return to their land. Next to that state, they want to establish an unidentified state with temporary borders on what is left of Palestine in the West Bank, Gaza Strip or East Jordan, called Palestine. “Over the decades, Perez deluded some of the Arabs and Western countries that he supports the establishment of two states, a Jewish and a Palestinian. But he did well by ending such a debate and emphasizing the concept of a Jewish Zionist state and his rejection to Arab existence inside Palestine. “Arabs must not be deluded by Israeli claims,” Jumblatt concluded.
