Saudi Arabia Pledges To Continue Support For The Lebanese People
17 July 2009
The Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon, Ali Awwad Assiri assured that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will not cease to support Lebanon financially and morally, after a visit he paid Friday to Economy and Trade Minister Mohammad Safadi. Ambassador Assiri pointed to his country’s desire to develop commercial and economic trades between Beirut and Riyadh. He indicated that the visit aims at rebooting communication with all officials, means to activate cooperation between private sector institutions in both countries and steps to be followed to introduce Saudi aids to all Lebanese regions. Minister Safadi thanked Saudi Arabia’s support to Lebanon, and described Assiri’s visit as “an expression of brotherhood that surpasses diplomatic formal frames.” Safadi then received the Ambassador of Italy to Lebanese, Gabriel Kikia and discussed economic ties between the two states. All opposition’s parties support Hariri Meanwhile, Democratic Gathering bloc MP Anwar Al Khalil confirmed on Friday that all the opposition’s parties intend to facilitate the mission of the Prime Minister Saad Hariri in forming the new cabinet. “None of the main leaders in the opposition expressed clear determination to get hold of the obstruction third vote, except Minister Sleiman Franjieh who was straightforward in his demand,” he argued. Saad Hariri has been asked to form a new Lebanese government after garnering the support of 86 members of the 128-seat body after he achieved victory on June 7 elections. He pledged to protect the interest of all Lebanese, and to extend his arms to all factions including Hizbullah. Khalil stressed that the opposition’s goal is to be an actual partner in the government, “which is the real dilemma facing all the politicians,” he added. Khalil asserted that Progressive socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt is struggling to oppress any chance that might rekindle a Sunnis-Shiite crisis which would destroy the country. MP Walid Jumblatt called for the creation of a "solid" gathering with Hizbullah, Almustaqbal Movement and Speaker Nabih Berry, saying such a gathering was "most essential" for the Muslim political arenas both in Beirut and its environs. “Jumblatt proposal to form an Islamic gathering is aimed at deterring regional danger,” he said, noting that PSP leader did not attempt to exclude the Christian’s role. Khalil described the “gathering called by Jumblatt” as a prelude towards achieving a comprehensive defense means without activating the quartet alliance. He asserted that the March 8 would not accept the “gathering” to deteriorate the relations within the opposition especially between Hizbullah and the Free Patriotic Movement. “Speaker Nabih Berry is capable of taking up the role of facilitator and the link connecting the March 14 and March 8 to form the new government before the end of July,” Khalil concluded. Berry told reporters following his meeting with Premier designate that the opposition and the parliamentary majority "reshuffled cards" when March 14 supported his re-election for the post of speaker and in return the opposition supported the appointment of Hariri as prime minister.
