Hizbollah Chief Nasrallah Calls Not To Pressurize Prime Minister Hariri
18 July 2009
Hizbullah General Secretary, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah asked political compatriots not to pressure Prime Minister designate Saad Hariri to form a government as soon as possible, assuring that he doesn’t want guarantees concerning his weapons and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, to facilitate Hariri’s task. Sayyed Nasrallah indicated that consultations with designated PM Hariri are ongoing and added that the party has endorsed openness and readiness to make efforts to form a national unity government. Nasrallah, who spoke on the first anniversary of Radwan operation (the liberation of prisoners and the retrieval of militants’ bodies) pointed that “the purpose of forming a government is reaching true partnership that leads to cooperation and not obstruction. He affirmed that his pro-Iranian party wants no terms or guarantees concerning the arsenal it possesses, denouncing rumors on Hizbullah’s fear from the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Nasrallah said “this is untrue. The matter wasn’t even discussed when I met President Hariri. We don’t ask for guarantees in this subject either.” He asked political compatriots not to pressure Prime Minister designate with time, since “the government formation needs time. No need for non-accounted mistakes” Nasrallah then addressed the prisoners’ issue, pointing that “Hizbullah is responsible for every missing or imprisoned resistant, whether he is an affiliate with the party, a Lebanese, Palestinian or Arab.” He also signaled to the necessity of working for the cause of prisoner Yehya Skaff and noted that the remains of a number of martyrs are still present in Israel, “although it claims it gave back everything. We don’t believe them and will work to retrieve the remains of our martyrs.” The March 8 leader also indicated that Hizbullah is following the files of the missing Lebanese detained by Israel, which include the four Iranian diplomats. Nasrallah assured “not because they are Iranians. It’s because they were detained on Lebanese grounds,” pointing that former governments “insufficiently” dealt with the matter. He concluded “Hizbullah is under the service of the Lebanese government”. Hariri responsible and positive Meanwhile, member of the ‘Liberation and Development’ bloc MP Ali Hassan Khalil affirmed on Friday that the parliament’s opposition “does not have anything against” Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri. The pro-Syrian MP said Hariri “is practicing his role (as designated to form the upcoming government) with a high level of positivity and responsibility, and we do not have any remarks against his performance.” Khalil said the Arab approach, through the Saudi-Syrian convergence, is “positive”, adding that it gave the government’s formation a thrust. Khalil, a prominent member of the Amal movement, stressed that the Lebanese must form a “national unity government through which the opposition can play a responsible part in the cabinet to confront Israeli challenges as well as domestic issuances.”
