Nigerian President YarAdua Reshuffles Cabinet -Again: Off For Egypt Non-Aligned

Godwin Abbe became Defence Minister on Tuesday in a minor cabinet rejig by President Umaru Yar'Adua that also affected Shettima Mustapha. Mustapha swapped his portfolio in Defence with Abbe, who was made to relinguish the Interior Ministry. Minister of State for Interior, Abdulrahman Adamu, equally exchanged with Ademola Seriki in Defence. A statement issued by Aso Rock Spokesman, Olusegun Adeniyi, said the changes took immediate effect. He did not give reasons. Abbe, who was born on January 10, 1949, is a retired Major General, also the Chairman of the Amnesty Panel negotiating with militants to end violence in the Niger Delta and accept the olive branch extended by Abuja. He joined the Army in 1967 and served in the Civil War. He has had both Nigerian and American military training. He was General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Mechanised Division between 1994 and 1995, and between 1993 and 1994 was Army Director of Operations. Abbe served as military Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 1988 to 1990 and of Rivers from 1990 to1991. Between 1996 and 1998, he was Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Commander of the Army, and between 1998 and 1999 Commandant of the National War College. He left the Army and later joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999. He is married with children. Nigerian President Yar'Adua Attends 15th Non-Aligned Summit in Egypt President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua is attending the 15th Non Aligned Movement summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. President Yar'Adua left Abuja on Tuesday July 14 for the two-day summit which began on Wednesday July 15. Outgoing President of the movement and Cuban leader, Mr Raul Castro in his speech called on world leaders to take measures to tackle the current world financial crisis. Declaring open the summit Mr Castro advocated a new international financial system based on the increased participation of developing nations. He said a new international financial framework was needed which does not depend solely on the economic stability and political decision of only one country He said the new system must give preferential treatrment to developing nations Meanwhile Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been elected the new President of the Heads of Governments of the summit The 15th summit which has the theme: "International Solidarity for Peace and Development," is expected to focus on ways to reactivate NAM in the current world situation, address international hot-spots and difficult problems and protect the interests of developing countries. The two-day summit will also address responses to the global financial crisis. The meeting of Heads of States and Governments will be preceded by that of Foreign Affairs minister which is expected to draft the agenda for the former. Nigeria, a foundation member of the movement and Africa's most influential member, has played a leading role in its affairs since inception. Nigeria has led the Non-Aligned Movement and played crucial roles in formulating its agreements and policy papers. The Non-Aligned Movement presently has 118 member states, with 15 observer states, representing two-thirds of the members of the United Nations and half of the world's population.
