The National Hajj Commission Of Nigeria Increase 2009 Hajj Fare By 12 Percent
18 July 2009
Intending pilgrims to this year's hajj from the North will pay a maximum of N581, 891, 93; medium of N507, 788, 23; and a minimum N470, 736, 38 while their counterparts from the South will pay the maximum of N588, 709, 43; medium of N514, 605, 73 and a minimum of N477, 553, 88. This is based on the 2009 hajj fare as released by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), representing 12 percent increase from last year's. NAHCON Chairman Muhammad Bello who made the announcement yesterday said, "contrary to the fear of the people, the fare is reasonable with little increase compare to the last year." The 12% increase in the fare, which was approved by the Federal Government, means intending pilgrims will pay an additional N72, 431, for maximum, N60, 413, 56, for medium and N52, 904, for minimum, against last year respectively. However, the increase did not affect the issue of Basic Travellers Allowances (BTA), as intending pilgrim for the Minimum seat will be entitle with $750 as BTA, Medium $1,000 BTA, while for Maximum the BTA is $1, 5000, which are all the same with that of last year. NAHCON said the "little increase" is as a result of the instability of the price of US dollar, which plays a decisive role in determining hajj fare, the commission says. Meanwhile, FCT minister Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero yesterday challenged the commission to ensure a hitch-free exercise. The minister, in his goodwill message at the first retreat organised by the commission, tasked them to review its past activities for "the purpose of improvement in the future." Represented by the Director FCT Directorate Muslims Pilgrims Welfare Board, Dr. Shu'aibu Kurfi, the minister said, a lot needs to be done by the commission in view of "its obvious challenges"
