Nigerian Opposition Accuses President Yar'Adua of Encouraging One-Party State
27 July 2009
Abuja — Action Congress (AC) and Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) have accused President Umaru Yar'Adua of moving Nigeria into a one-party state. The PPA, in a statement by its National Chairman, Chief Clement Ebri, said the decamping of Imo State Governor, Ikedi Ohakim, to PDP "must be condemned in the strongest terms by all democrats and supporters of competitive politics in Nigeria . We can not begin to ground opposition politics or consolidate democracy in this land, if the ruling party insists on abusing its incumbency power by encouraging a do-or-die brand of politics that is morally bankrupt and bereft of principles. This will, if left unchecked, make our country a one - party state." He said the gradual entrenchment of a virtual one-party state by PDP runs counter to the active diversity and vibrancy of the Nigerian political space, adding that the decamping of Ohakim violates the principle of divergence of ideas and standpoints upon which the best tradition of liberal democracy is founded, and quoted Reverend Martin Luther King, who said "nothing is more dangerous than an idea, when it is the only one." AC, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, noted that, "leading the dangerous trend is no other than President Umaru Yar'Adua, who has shown by his enthusiastic embrace of such defecting officials that he is a closet dictator masquerading as a democrat." It described as morally repugnant and politically untenable, Ohakim's decision to abandon the party that propelled him to office in favour of the PDP, saying he must have acted on the desire to get another term in office, rather than the interest of the people of his state.
