Sheikh Sabri warns against Israeli intents to divide Aqsa Mosque
15 July 2009
Sheikh Ikrema Sabri, the head of the higher Islamic committee in occupied Jerusalem, warned Friday that Jewish rabbis discussed few days ago the idea of dividing the Aqsa Mosque between Muslims and Jews, highlighting that no one in the world has the right to give up or take a single grain of soil from the holy Mosque. During the weekly Friday Khutba (sermon), Sheikh Sabri stressed that the Aqsa Mosque belongs to Muslims alone and connected to their religious creed, adding that the rabbis' idea is totally rejected and nonnegotiable. He categorically denied that the Jews have places of worship in Jerusalem, confirming that the excavations, which lasted for 40 years in the holy city, did not lead to one stone related to the Jewish history. The Palestinian scholar recalled that Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khatab and all Muslim leaders throughout the history preserved the Christian churches in Jerusalem, and if there had been Jewish shrines, they would have safeguarded them because the religion of Islam demands its followers to respect holy places of non-Muslims. The scholar also expressed rejection of the Israeli idea of alternative home which calls for deporting Palestinians to Jordan and declaring Palestine as the homeland for Jews. He strongly denounced the Israeli occupation for kidnapping Sheikh Ali Al-Abbasi, the Aqsa Mosque’s imam, and issuing a decision to exile him from Jerusalem, saying that this decision is a dangerous precedent and posed a risk to other staff and guards of the Mosque. In another related context, Sheikh Ra’ed Salah, the head of the Islamic Movement in the 1948 occupied lands, stated Thursday that resorting to Israeli occupation courts regarding any issue of the Aqsa Mosque is unacceptable because the Mosque is suffering from the occupation and the Israeli courts represent this occupation. In a press statement, he said that the submission of petitions and complaints to Israeli courts is considered recognition that the occupation has sovereignty over the Aqsa Mosque. A number of Palestinians in Israel had submitted days ago a petition to the central court in Jerusalem on the Israeli violations against the Aqsa Mosque. During the Friday Khutba held in Al-Bustan neighborhood, Sheikh Salah underlined that all Zionist schemes would be dashed against the fortitude and Islamic brotherhood of the Palestinian people in Silwan and Jerusalem. He urged the Jerusalemite people to uphold their steadfastness in the face of Israeli plans to demolish dozens of Palestinian homes in the holy city.
