Somali President Asks Somali-Americans To Shun Islamists: Ahlu Sunna Waljma'a Clerics Call
16 July 2009
Mogadishu — Somali President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed called on all Somalis living in America not to engage in the activities of Al-Shabaab, the Islamist rebel organisation. His plea comes at a time when fresh fighting erupted between Transitional forces and Islamist rebels. "I call on the Somali-American community not to send their youth to Somalia to fight alongside Al-Shabaab," he said in a press briefing Sunday. Somalis began arriving in the United States in significant numbers after the U.S. intervention in Somalia's humanitarian crisis in 1992. American media reports say last year, a group of Somali-Americans left Minneapolis and are feared to have been recruited into Al-Shabaab. Shirwa Ahmed a 27-year-old Somali-American living in his adopted home state of Minnesota had been radicalized by the Al-Shabaab before travelling to Somalia and blowing up himself and 29 others in October 2008. The president showed concern over the high number of Somalis coming from America to support Al- Shabaab's activities. "I am saying to those young men from abroad: 'Your families fled your home to America because of insecurity. You should not return here to ferment violence against your people,'" he said. The US homeland security website acknowledges that Somalis are indeed moving in large numbers to Somalia to support the terror movement's activities. Ahlu Sunna Waljma'a Clerics Call TFG to End Clashes in Mogadishu The Islamic organization of Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a in Galgudud region has called for the transitional government to end the clashes going on in the Somalia capital Mogadishu, officials told local radio on Wednesday. Sheik Omar Sheik Mohamud Farah, a chirman of Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a held press conference and talked more sides about the situation of the country calling for the transitional government to conclude the fighting continuing in the Somali capital Mogadishu. "We are sorry for the fighting between the transitional government and the opposition groups in Mogadishu so we are suggesting to the government to take steps to end the fighting in the capital," said Sheik Omar. He said that the transitional government is a legitimate government pointing out that it is unfortunate for the forces against it to refuse adding that the war has more faces calling far the TFG not use its power to the Somali people whom he said that they know nothing what to do about the fighting and dying in the clashes day after day. He also called for the Somali businessmen to stand for how they would stand solving the tense situations in the country. It is not the first time that Ahlu Sunna WAljama'a clerics who are controlling Galgudud region in central Somalia talk about the fighting in the Somalia capital Mogadishu.
