South African Husband Stabs Wife To Death In Front Of Two Children
26 July 2009
A Howick man repeatedly stabbed his estranged wife in front of their two children in KwaZulu-Natal in March 2007, the Pietermaritzburg High Court heard on Tuesday. This evidence was given in the murder trial of Jaiseelan Govindsamy, 39, accused of the murder of his wife Anthea at the Howick Falls. He has admitted to the killing, but pleaded not guilty to murder, saying he lacked the capacity to appreciate the wrongfulness of his actions at the time. Four psychiatrists were sitting in on the trial and would present their assessment later. Witness Nadia Maree said a woman, Geraldine Govindsamy, tried to pull Govindsamy off his wife but she fell down and he fell on top of Geraldine. He got up and carried on stabbing his wife. Geraldine earlier told the court he repeatedly said: "If I can't have you no one else will... till death us do part." Maree said a shot went off, but she did not know who fired it, and she saw some men hitting the accused while he was on the ground. Anthea was rushed to a Howick hospital but was dead. She had been granted a magistrate's protection order against her husband five days before her killing. The trial continues. Woman crushed to death by truck In a separate incident, a woman was crushed to death by a truck in Nelspruit on Monday, reportedly while trying to avoid litter being thrown in her direction by protesting municipal workers. Captain Charles Bezuidenhout confirmed on Tuesday that a woman in her forties was killed in an accident involving a truck at around 10.20am in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. "The truck driver was busy reversing when he hit the woman," said Bezuidenhout. He said he could not confirm a report in the Sowetan newspaper that the woman was trying to get away from striking municipal workers who were hurling litter in her direction. "But the accident did happen in the central business district where workers were protesting," said Bezuidenhout
